Information about Interviews and Status of Searches

Does anyone know the status of Villanova's search?

Anonymous said...

I applied to Villanova in early September and still have yet to hear from them (other than that the application was received). They didn't have a specific deadline so it's unclear when they'll even begin reviewing applications.

Has anyone received rejection letters from Gettysburg? Someone wrote on the wiki that they arranged a campus interview 10/23, which seems awfully quick given their deadline was 10/15. If they have already made their decision for all intended campus visits, I hope they send rejection letters soon (to reduce uncertainty).

(the above refers to the social psych positions)

Anonymous said...

I've yet to hear of anyone getting a rejection letter from Gettysburg, but I know campus interviews are being conducted in the next couple weeks. So, they may be maintaining the applicant pool in case they need to dip back into it.

For developmental searches (at small schools), does anyone know anything about Drew Univ and Illinois Wesleyan's positions? Or even about the departments?

Anonymous said...

anyone know what the deal with boston college and uc riverside is (both developmental)? it looks like BC scheduled interviews before the closing date and riverside only two days after. seems odd....

Anonymous said...

Was the closing date a firm one (for BU)? Depending on the language of the ad, I suppose it could be "legal" to start interviews.

Anonymous said...

regarding the SF State Social position - someone posted that they reviewed all the applications on Monday and wouldn't extend the search. I'm assuming this means that they have plenty of potential applicants and won't review late/uncompleted apps, right?

Any other news on this position? I just got a letter saying that due to the overwhelming # of applications... it could be MONTHS!

Anonymous said...

replying to own SFSU post above... ha, should have checked the wiki first... thanks for your reply! =)

Anonymous said...

i've been told that they had received well over 100 applications for the SFSU position, and this was about a week before the clsoing date.

Anonymous said...

I have applied to a position whose deadline is today (10/31). My application went in a few weeks ago (by email, as requested in the job ad), and all of my references have sent in their letters. But, I haven't gotten an acknowledgment that my application has been received/is complete. Should I worry about calling the chair of the search just to check that they have my application? The 31st wasn't a hard deadline, it was one of those "to make sure we look carefully at your application, get it to us by X" statements.

Anonymous said...

Regarding application status:

It can't hurt to contact them. Also, you could provide the name of the school here and others can let you know if they received a confirmation letter. I bet that they received your application, and the confirmation is in the mail or will be sent out soon. Personally, I haven't contacted schools about my applications that are in limbo, but I know how stressful it can be.

Anonymous said...

I have all my stuff in, but one of my letter writers is taking his sweet time in sending his letter out - anyone have any clue how that is likely to impact reviews of my application. Will I be looked down on because of his delay? Thanks!

Anonymous said...

About late letters - I can't speak for everyone, but in searches we've conducted (small liberal arts school), we would not likely do a phone interview with someone who was missing a letter, or invite them to an interview until we got the missing piece. This was mainly for legal reasons, as one letter is not likely to dramatically change our impression of a candidate. But, we have encouraged applicants who we were interested in to please get their letter writers to hurry up.

Anonymous said...

I have the same problems with my letters. One professor is almost always late in sending them. My understanding is that as long as the application get there on time, it's ok to have late letters as long as it's only a few days delay.

Anonymous said...

Hi- has anyone heard back from Seattle University? They had a preliminary application for the assistant professor position and said they would notify applicants by the 31st if they made the first cut.

This waiting process is so difficult!!

Anonymous said...

Are the positions at BU (Boston) still even open? I sent my application in on 10/1 and according to delivery confirmation it was received. I haven't gotten ANYTHING from them, not even an acknowledgment of receipt.

As far as the developmental positions at Drew and Illinois - I applied for both too and I'm not sure of the status. I'm not familiar with either school, I just know what is available on their website.

Anonymous said...

BU Positions: They were re-listed on the APA site on Oct 31, so I assume they're active.

Williams Cog/Cog Neuro search: This is at least the third, and possibly the fourth, year of posting the very same ad. What's up with that? Two in a row, sure. Three? Maybe four? What gives? Surely Williams can attract enough candidates to choose from?

Anonymous said...

Regarding Villanova...

The experimental-social psych search has been postponed until next year. The college has suspended all current faculty searches. I updated the wiki with more details.

This is so disappointing and distressing. I wonder how many more positions will be canceled.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know anything about the University of Michigan HIV/ AIDS position listed on the Wiki? Is that in the Psychology Department?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know how common it is not to hear back about applications you've sent in? I sent some applications in starting October 1, and additional applications due October 15. I know that the applications got there (I used delivery confirmation). But, while I received confirmation letters and/or e-mails from some schools, I haven't heard back from several of the sites to which I applied. Is this pretty common?

I'm trying to figure out if I should contact schools to ensure that my applications are complete. Any comments would help. Thanks!

Anonymous said...

I also have not received confirmation that some of my applications have arrived. It seems somewhat common, but I don't feel comfortable asking (especially if it's past the deadline. If it's still before the deadline, it's probably fine to ask. It's probably all right to ask after the deadline, but I can't help but think their impression might be, "why didn't you ask earlier?").

Anonymous said...

What is the average number of applications you all are sending out? I am a clinical-health person and I have sent out 23 apps with a few more to go. Do you think this is enough?

Anonymous said...

I am in social psychology and have applied to 43 places so far (and am planning to apply to more). I'm applying to social psych positions and general-experimental positions (as well as a small number of cognitive or applied-quantitative positions).

I think it's difficult to judge if you are applying to enough places. I am geographically limited due to my partner, so I am applying to every university that is relevant to my area and within a 10-hr radius of the geographic region I am limited to. However, I think it's generally a good strategy to only apply to the places you are genuinely willing to work at if you are not geographically limited (and thus potentially desperate). However, if you haven't heard from anyone by December, it may be worth widening your search and applying to another 15+ places.

Anonymous said...

It's hard to say when you applied to "enough" positions. When I was first on the market, I sent out about 38. If there are still some more openings out there that you genuinely would be interested in, then I'd say keep applying.

Anonymous said...

I am a clinical-health person too, and was encouraged to apply to around 25-ish places... Which feels like a ton, and yet so few when I have not heard much from anyone just yet.

Anonymous said...

To the person asking about the Boston College developmental position, I don't know what the deadline for applications is/was, but BC started interviewing candidates the last week of October, and a couple more interviews are scheduled in the next week or so.

Anonymous said...

Anyone know why Ohio University extended their deadline to February?

Anonymous said...

Maybe Ohio University didn't get as much interest as they had hoped for.

Anonymous said...

Is there anyone else that truly hates phone interviews? I do much better in person. It also seems like it takes so long for the search committee to get back to you after phone interviews.

Anonymous said...

I've only had one phone interview, as most of the schools I have applied to don't conduct these. Personally I found it no more or less stressful than an actual interview, and at least it was over quickly! Search committee was fairly quick to get back to me after (~2 weeks later).

Anonymous said...

I had a phone interview with SFSU last week. Has anyone who had a phone interview heard back yet about a job talk?

Anonymous said...

Anyone know about Maine or Vermont?

Anonymous said...

I have not heard from Vermont yet. Any word on Ohio State or University of Maryland BC?

Anonymous said...

I have not heard from UMBC either.

Anonymous said...

I haven't heard back from SFSU after my phone interview either.

Anonymous said...

Is anyone else starting to feel that there is a substantially shrinking number of jobs this year? I just got an email from the U of Vermont that their search has been canceled (already updated the Wiki).

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard from U Toledo regarding their social position? The wiki had been updated with a phone interview, but that update has since been removed.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard about the University of Miami's child position? I see that some people have updated the wiki about phone interviews, but has anyone been offered an on campus interview?

Anonymous said...

RE: Miami

I was contacted about the Applied Developmental position (I applied for both Developmental and Clinical), and they said they had a "semi-short" list and they weren't sure how many (or who) they were going to invite. This was as of 11/12, and I haven't heard anything else.

Anonymous said...

I just found out today (via email) that I was offered on on-campus job talk for the SFSU social position; just wanted to update this list.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone else who did a phone interview with SFSU received notice of being offered an on-campus job talk?

Anonymous said...

congrats on the highly-coveted SFSU job talk position!!! i'm jealous!

Anonymous said...

In response to 11/14 7:09, yes, I was invited to interview at SFSU, too.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone else been offered a job talk at Miami (developmental)?

Anonymous said...

I saw an entry on the wiki for the Grinnell clinical position: any word on the neuroscience opening?

Anonymous said...

RE: Miami

Yes, I was offered to come down for a job talk for Developmental on Friday.

Anonymous said...

Re: Miami

Did they say how many people they were interviewing?

Anonymous said...

RE Miami

Actually I didn't ask that - probably should have!

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard from Franklin and Marshall regarding their social position?

Anonymous said...

re: Grinnell

Neuroscience applicant, I wish I had news for you! I am doing a phone interview for the clinical position next week and will let you know if they mention anything about the other search when I ask them about time frame. I assume the same person (the dept chair) is chairing both searches, so they are probably juggling both at once.

Anonymous said...

Anyone have updates for Old Dominion U? There was a phone interview listed, but no campus interviews?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard any new news about the North Texas position (psychotherapy research)?

Anonymous said...

I had a phone interview with Old Dominion and they said that they would get back to me in Dec with a decision about on-campus interviews which will likely take place in January.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know that status of the Univ. of Denver's search?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if UC Irvine has begun interviewing?

Anonymous said...

re. the Univ of Denver job: it looks like DU has a hiring freeze for faculty & staff – see this article

sucks.

Anonymous said...

RE: Denver

Someone posted on the wiki indicating that those positions are still open, as of 11/21

Anonymous said...

IUPUI said they would be contacting people this week - anyone hear anything from them?

Anonymous said...

How did the Grinnell clinical interviews go last week?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know the status of the UCSD searches?

Anonymous said...

re: Grinnell

I interviewed for the clinical spot last week. Didn't hear anything about the status of the neuroscience position, though they mentioned that they were looking to do on-site interviews for the clinical spot during mid-December if possible (and if not -- either because candidates can't make it, or because they can't pick the candidates in time -- then after the holidays). As far as I know, they have not sent out on-site interview invites yet. They have to meet with the Dean and the rest of the department to decide who gets invited first (I *think* that is supposed to happen this week, but maybe with Thanksgiving it won't happen until next week).

Anonymous said...

Does anyone have any information about the behavioral neuroscience position at SUNY-Binghamton?

Anonymous said...

re: Grinnell

Thank you for the info, that is very helpful. And, congratulations/good luck on the on-campus interview (if it was you that posted the update for the clinical position)!

I am curious if Grinnell is moving on their neuroscience position, as the deadline was Oct 31. But, since it is a position that could be in the psychology, biology or chemistry departments, it could very well be that they are doing phone interviews with chemists and biologists.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know the status of the UC-Riverside search? It looks like their interviews have ended and I am wondering if anyone has heard of an offer going out.

Anonymous said...

Concerning the UCR, I know that the faculty has made an offer to one of the candidates.

Anonymous said...

re: Grinnell neuro

Looks like they have candidates scheduled to come to campus the week of Dec 8th. It's disappointing not to have heard anything from them, but I'm curious if they are interviewing psychology candidates.

Anonymous said...

Anyone have an interview scheduled with U of Denver?

Anonymous said...

has anyone heard about an interview from sonoma state?

Regarding Macalester: The interviews have been set for November & early December

Anonymous said...

re: Macalester interviews in Nov/Dec

It looked like you were responding to a post that was deleted. I was curious, however: are those interviews for the developmental position or for both (dev and cog neurosci)? And, are those phone interviews or campus interviews?

Anonymous said...

no word from sonoma state, was thinking they'd make calls before thanksgiving... surely sometime this week then, right?

Anonymous said...

Interviews are really starting to heat up. I have not received any interview offers, and have not even been contacted about short lists. Anyone else in the same boat? I wonder if there is still hope...?

Anonymous said...

I'm in the same boat. Really, you can only focus on what's within your control: obsessively checking here, praying, lashing out at loved ones.....:). I know a friend who got no calls until about February, then got 3 or 4 interviews. Try to stay positive and use it as motivation for working harder......

Anonymous said...

I have not had any interview calls yet either. I went over my list and about half my places seem to have not contacted any one yet. And I was told often a second round is made in February for many jobs as places wait and make offers to people who have taken offers by then.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know what is going on with Ithaca College? It looks like they re-posted their position today.

Anonymous said...

I just saw on the wiki that Pomona is doing phone interviews this week - has anyone done one yet? How recently did they get in touch with you? I sent in my materials last month but have not heard anything yet - not even an acknowledgement.

Anonymous said...

For people who've gotten interviews, how fast do schools typically want to schedule the interview from the time they contact you about it? Just curious with the holidays coming up whether it's safe to assume that if you haven't heard by now, you probably won't have an interview scheduled until the new year?

Anonymous said...

In response to Anonymous on Dec. 4th. I have received information that I made a couple of short lists and have one interview scheduled for January. The schools that have contacted me had very early deadlines (October). I have not heard back from any other schools (except two rejection letters -one from SFSU and the other from Roger Williams). I have a feeling that most of the phone interviews etc. will occur in January. Anyone know whether my speculation is correct?

Anonymous said...

Re: fast interviews - my experience has ranged from two weeks to a little over a month between the initial phone call and scheduling.

Anonymous said...

I had one interview this year where they called me and told me that I needed to come out in a week and a half! I would suggest to everyone that they have a job talk ready to go, just in case. But, with the holidays and finals coming up, I would say that if you haven't gotten a phone call by this time, you won't be giving a job talk until January at least.

Anonymous said...

The one interview invite I have gotten so far scheduled the interview for the following week (I got the call on a Monday and went out there a week and 2 days later) -- I think this crunch was because they wanted to bring out their entire short list and make an offer before the holidays.

Otherwise, there's no reason to rush as much, so it's probably safe to say that if you don't have an interview scheduled yet, any invites that happen will be for after the holidays.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone been notified on their status for either of the positions at East Carolina University?

Anonymous said...

RE: ECU
I haven't heard from ECU either. However, given that their deadline was Oct 15 and the rank was open, I'm going to guess that the wiki wasn't updated and I've been rejected. I hope that I'm wrong for me and you.

RE: Timing of interviews
I noticed that someone posted on the wiki that an email was received today (12/6) for an interview during the following week (the week of 12/8). Wow, talk about short notice! Perhaps there will be a few interviews scheduled before the break.

Anonymous said...

Anyone have any news on the status of the Univ. of Michigan search?

Anonymous said...

On the wiki, someone posted that Rutgers-Camden "finalists identified 12/5." Stupid question, perhaps, but do you mean they contacted the finalists already? Thanks!

Anonymous said...

RE: finalists
I don't know anything about that specific position, but based on my limited experience the short-list or finalists are contacted immediately.

Anonymous said...

Can I vent for a minute folks? You get an interview. You work like hell on the talk, do copious research on the department, have a terrific interview, and then are told that the funding for the position is still uncertain and will need to be reviewed by the powers above. grumble

Anonymous said...

Anyone happen to know how the Iowa State University Psych/Law search is progressing? Supposedly the faculty meeting to vote on candidates was held at the end of business on Dec 1st...

On a side grumble: Man, this year is a harsh one with so many positions evaporating due to funding, hopefully next year will be better (well, hopefully I won't need next year, but you know what I mean :) )

Anonymous said...

Re: grumble

In all of my interviews, I've asked about how the economy has affected the dept and the university, in general. The deans/chairs were upfront: the position is secure (thus, the reason for the on-campus interview), but there is always uncertainty about salary or start-up.

What happened to you was wrong -- they should have emphasized that the position is contingent upon budgetary approval.

Anonymous said...

Yesterday, the wiki was updated indicating that finalists for the developmental position at Vanderbilt had been identified, but today that update was deleted. Does anyone know if candidates who are on the short list for this position have been contacted?

Anonymous said...

re: stanford child and adolescent development position:

does 'finalists identified' mean that the finalists have been contacted/invited for an interview?

Anonymous said...

Can anyone comment on whether or not it is acceptable to use notes during campus interviews. Obviously you don't want to spend an in-person interview with your nose buried in notes, but I have a number of questions, and I fear I will forget some of them. Is it ok to bring a sheet or two with some of my questions?

Anonymous said...

I think it is absolutely fine to bring notes. I did, and I think it impressed them. It shows you have given the position some thought. All I did was ensure that the interview remained conversational. That is, I would jot down notes very quickly, and while maintaining eye contact/smiling etc. They had notes and were writing things down as well, so it did not feel awkward. You just want to avoid having the notes drag down the energy of the interview.

Anonymous said...

I second the comment that notes are not just acceptable, but good. It is very important that you have questions ready when they give you the chance to ask them, and the slight risk that consulting notes might distract you a little bit is outweighed by the definite risk you run by relying on your memory in a stressful situation.

In preparation for interviews, I made a sheet for each interviewer in advance (I printed out their dept. directory listing because it has a picture and their research interests) and came up with questions tailored to each one (if they are untenured faculty, ask about the transition to this university... if they are an associate professor, ask about the tenure process... if they teach a class you might be teaching, talk about that... etc.) Because I had a few questions designed for each specific person, each page only had a few questions on it, and I didn't have to spend any time messing with my notes or deciding which of many questions to ask.

I find that this method leads to more fruitful conversations because you are asking people questions that they are uniquely poised to answer, and it also shows that you are interested and bothered to do your homework.

Anonymous said...

Can anyone speak to the likelihood that universities will finish up with their first round of interviews, make offers, have offers rejected, and dip back into the applicant pool? This doesn't sound like a very likely scenario, but there are many places that have scheduled interviews but not sent rejection letters. Are those places holding the applicant pool for a second round, or are they just not in a hurry to let rejected candidates know?

Anonymous said...

I have heard of a school dipping back into the applicant pool, so hang in there until you get that rejection letter.

Anonymous said...

I have an interview this year where I know I'm in the second round and a friend of mine got some jobs last year where she was in the second round of interviews. So, it's possible...

Anonymous said...

Several faculty have told me that they often end up going back to the pool of applicants. Not always, but often. Their first two choices are frequently hired by the time they do all full interview/funding dance or something else comes up. I think many schools only send rejection letters when all is signed and for sure with their new hire.

Anonymous said...

I am going CRAZY waiting to hear back from my top choice! They finished interviewing people last week and now it's just suspense. I wish I could press fast-forward! I have no way of knowing if the process is slow vs. they made an offer to someone and they're going to hold onto it until January! ARGH!

Anonymous said...

Re: December 16, 2008 10:30 AM

I understand your anxiety! I've been waiting to hear whether another candidate accepts or declines the offer extended to him/her by my preferred university. I certainly wouldn't mind being their second choice!

Anonymous said...

To the last poster (from the previous anxious & waiting poster): did your top university inform you when they had extended another offer, or did you have to ask them for an update in order to find out? I am afraid an offer has already been extended at my top choice place and they just haven't told me (I've heard nothing), but I have no real excuse to ask them for an update except that I want to know.

Anonymous said...

Re: December 16, 2008 2:25 PM

I haven't heard anything from that school. I'm actually relying on the wiki for my information. It had been updated regarding an offer being made.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Re: December 16, 2008 2:25 PM. I am not sure if anyone else on the wiki made it to the interview stage at (or even applied to) the place I am waiting on coz' it's pretty small. I'd ask here if there's anyone else who is in the running, but I feel like that kind of violates the anonymity rule. :/

Anonymous said...

It's now mid-December and I've only gotten one interview. According to the wiki about half my schools are already interviewing. Anyone else in a similar position and freaking out??

Anonymous said...

To "worried" on December 16, 2008 10:30 AM:

What area of psychology are you in? Some of us might be able to provide inside information if we have a little more detail about your circumstances.

Anonymous said...

Re: "worried"

I am in Developmental Psychology. I have one year of post-doc experience and have 5 pubs (4 first author, 1 second) author. I was told that Dec is still kind of early, but after looking at the wiki page, it seems that alot of schools are already interviewing. This is my first time on the job market and the whole process I guess is just stressing me out.

Anonymous said...

There are a lot in Developmental that have no information: Santa Cruz, BU, Univ of Michigan, Clarke, Charleston, James Madison, Penn State, Amherst, Yeshiva - I could go on!

Anonymous said...

Also...my dept is one of the places hiring and I know that everyone is just swamped right now. It is that horrible time of the semester. So it's likely that search committees are too busy to meet right now. So hang in there..

Anonymous said...

Did anyone who posts here get one of the interviews at Barnard (Developmental)?

Anonymous said...

Yes, I have an interview at Barnard.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous@December 17, 2008 10:13 AM:

Good to know, though it seems like a lot of places are already bringing in people. Personally, I'm freaking out because during my last job search (2 years ago, pre-postdoc, in Cognitive area) I got 4 interviews, while this time I haven't received any. I don't understand what's different this time around. It's not like my vita got shorter....

Also, does anyone know what's going on with the Hamilton search?

Anonymous said...

Did anyone else on here interview at Grinnell for clinical? I would just like to know if anyone else is updating the page.

Anonymous said...

For the person who got the interview at Barnard - would you mind telling us how many publications you have? Are you a post-doc? It was my first choice and I didn't get an interview - I'm just trying to figure out if my vita just isn't where it should be yet to be on the market for a job like Barnard's.

I noticed that someone updated Ramapo College of NJ with a phone interview yesterday. Was the phone interview invitation 12/17 or was that the actual date of the interview? Does anyone know if they are done contacting people for a phone interview?

Joshua said...

Can anyone tell me what is happening with Fordham?

It was posted on the websited that the "search has been cancelled" as of 12/16, a colleague of mine received an email today that there is a "hiring freeze" as of 12/18, and I had a phone interview with them as recently as last week and have received no such notification.

Anonymous said...

Joshua - I received that email as well. It said they were canceling all searches except the Cognitive/Experimental. I copied and pasted the email below.

The Psychology Department would like to thank you for your interest in Fordham and your patience during this application process. We began carefully reviewing and ranking applications for all three positions (Clinical, Applied Developmental, and Cognitive/Experimental) beginning in November. Unfortunately, we were notified on December 5 by the President of the University, the Academic Vice President, and the Dean of Faculty that all but one of our hires was being frozen, along with many hires around the University. This was very discouraging news for us. The one line for which we are continuing to search is Cognitive/Experimental. I believe we still have job descriptions posted online at APA. If you think you might be a candidate for that position, you can send your materials to Mark Mattson at Lincoln Center or you can let us know at leicht@fordham.edu and we will transfer them over.

RE: Ramapo

The phone interview was on 12/17. And they said they would be deciding who to bring in to campus by Sunday (12/21).

Anonymous said...

I noticed that someone posted that Providence College had conducted their campus interviews (and that there was no interview date). Did someone just contact them for an update and find out that the interviews had already been finished? Any information would be appreciated.

Anonymous said...

Re: Sonoma State Social Position

Someone updated the wiki saying an offer was made and accepted 12/16. I got an initial interest call back in Nov, but then heard nothing since and thought that maybe funding was cut.

Would you mind sharing the timing of everything? Did you have a phone interview? When were on campus interviews? How many were interviewed (if you know)?

Anonymous said...

Someone posted an update for the U of Toledo today dated back in November, stating they would make decisions on 12/4 about who to bring in - anyone have more info on this? I did not even get an acknowledgment for my app until 12/4 and am wondering why the updates from Nov today?

Anonymous said...

Re: Providence College (social) This is not my area of psychology but a very close friend applied and interviewed at PC in November. I know at least two individuals were interviewed and an offer has been made. I posted on here because I know how crazy it makes me not knowing the status of various places!

Anonymous said...

RE: Toledo clinical position

I had a "brief phone interview" with a faculty member from Toledo in November. This faculty indicated they would be meeting the week after Thanksgiving to make their list for on-campus interviews. I have not heard anything else from them, which I assume means I did not make their short list.

Anonymous said...

To the person who posted information about Providence -- Thank you! It is definitely helpful to have this information (especially considering how few places send rejection letters).

Anonymous said...

Is anyone finding that searches are taking a REALLY long time to get moving? I am in Behavioral Neuroscience and by this time last year I had already done 3 campus interviews....but this year it seems to be moving much slower.

BTW--are other Behavioral Neuroscience folks updating the wiki? It seems like there is a huge lag between application deadlines and any kind of update.
Thanks! Good luck to all.

Anonymous said...

Anyone else updating U of North Dakota. I know they made offers for interviews as I am #3 on the list and am now waiting for #1 or 2 to respond. If they are not interested I get to interview and waiting is making me nutty. Just curious - if you got the interview, how many pubs do you have, are you postoc, number of classes taught? Just trying to figure out where I am less competitive.

Anonymous said...

Re: Behavioral Neuroscience

Yes, I have been updating the Wiki too. However, I feel the same way you do... this is moving forward so slowly!

I'm getting anxious on the BN at SUNY Binghamton. The Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience search has started calling interviews. Anyone have any news on the time frame for the BN search there?

Anonymous said...

It is my understanding that people on the shortlist who are asked interview are deemed qualified. Candidates are "ranked" on how well they fit in the department's mission, culture and research.

So, it is not about weaknesses in the CV.

Anonymous said...

In regard to the earlier discussion about `signs´that search commities may give to aplicants. I can now say that on my interview I was given many of those signs (when we start negotiating your startup..., everyone keeps saying how much we need to get you here..., etc.) and did NOT get the job offer. I am convinced that they say those things to everyone to make you really like them just in case they want you.

Anonymous said...

I don't go by "signs". I think that when I'm on an interview, I'm giving off "signs" as well that this place is one of my top choices - it makes complete sense that both sides are going to give off "signs" and be on best behavior because who wants to turn off a possible job or job candidate.

And, I think it's very standard in interviews to be shown lab space, talk about "when/if you're hired", etc. As they should. Most schools operate on the assumption that they might have to go to a second or third choice - if their first choice turns them down - so of course they're going to talk with you as though you might be hired...because you just might be hired. And I think a lot of times there is no clear consensus during interviews as to who the top candidate is - some faculty may really like you and you might be picking up on those vibes, while others might not but are good at shielding how they think about you - so it ain't over until the faculty get together and decide together who the top candidate is.

Anonymous said...

RE: Behavioral Neuroscience at Binghamton
I heard from a grad school friend that the committee is still going through the applications and that they couldn't give him an update on his status.

It sounds like the other committee is moving a little faster.

Other cognitive anonymous: I just got an email about a phone interview from Hamilton - will update wikidot later.

I saw the recent update on the wiki about University of Miami potentially canceling all of their searches. Does anyone have more information about that? Was this based on a phone call that you made to the department? I applied for the clinical position.

Anyone has info on the UMBC clinical job? I got a affirmative action letter (the fill this out, send back thing) from them in the mail today, but the wiki said it has been canceled. I was never notified it had been canceled though, anyone else have more detailed info?

Re: Miami

I know through a friend who was interviewed that Miami has cancelled some (if not all) of their searches. I don't know specifically about the clinical position. Sorry to bring the bad news. Looks like a terrible year for the job market.

Re: UMBC Clinical Position

Yes I received a personal email from the chair of the search committee the funds had been canceled for the position. This occurred after I had been offered an on-campus interview and a date had been set.

Economic times are tough.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the info on Miami. I interviewed and haven't had an update. The Chair did tell me when I met with him, that they would only be hiring in a couple of their searches this year.

Anyone heard anything about the status of the Behavioral Neuroscience search at the University of Delaware? No updates on the wiki, but the search closed a couple of months ago. Thanks! Good luck to everyone.

Any news on the Reed Animal/Experimental/Learning position?

If someone has a verbal offer from the Chair, how long does a formal offer take?

Anonymous said...

To the person who received confirmation of their application to Capital University, do you recall approximately when you sent your materials in? Just wondering if I should expect a letter later, or should call to check in on my materials.

thanks!

Has anyone heard anything about the Roger Williams Cog Neuro position?

Re: Capital. I submitted an application back in November and emailed the contact to confirm the receipt of my materials. I then received a self-identification letter/card at some point, but honestly don't remember exactly when that came. I was informed that the review of materials would start on January 5.

Does anyone know anything about the time schedule for the U-C Santa Cruz developmental search?

re: santa cruz developmental

RE Lag between verbal offer and official offer:

In my experience, those schools who are extremely motivated to get an offer out can do so in a few days, but the typical lag is at least a couple of weeks. If it goes much longer than that, you may want to send an email to the head/chair to see if something is amiss (e.g., a snag in the Dean's office).

Anonymous said...

Re: Lag between verbal and written offer

I was fortunate to have two offers. In both instances, the verbal offer was made via telephone by the department chair and followed by an email from the Dean with the scanned/signed letter attached within 24 hours. The paper copy arrived within a week. I thought that this was typical but perhaps I'm mistaken.

Has anyone heard anything about the status of the UMass Amherst positions?

Re: UMass Amherst

Job talks for the cognitive position have been posted on the department's website. I have updated the wiki with a link.

Does anyone know anything about the University of Tulsa (Clinical) position? I saw the wiki that they interviewed a candidate on 10/29 so I assumed they had moved forward in their search but I recently received an email asking me to update them on the status of my job search.

Does anyone know about the psychology and public policy or law job at Georgetown? They said that they wanted to complete the search quickly, but I'm not sure what that means. I know other schools with similar language and timelines have moved on to the interview and offer stages. Thanks.

Has anyone heard anything about the job at Sarah Lawrence College? It says on the wiki that an offer was made at the end of December, but it has no information as to whether the offer was accepted to rejected.

FYI--The SUNY System appears to have a hiring freeze following major budget cuts for the 2009-2010 academice year (by the governnor). Anyone have anything more specific about that? or, better yet, anyone have any good news about hiring for SUNY schools?

For folks who have interviewed: How long did it take for you to be reimbursed for travel? It has been 7 weeks since my interview and I was told that I (hopefully) we receive a check by the end of the month. I know we had XMAS break, but this just seems too long!

Anonymous said...

just got my check today after about 7 weeks. i think winter break, plus campus closures in january for schools on the semester systems, slow things down.

Anonymous said...

Re: Reimbursement

I too interviewed in mid-December and have yet to be reimbursed. I was told to expect it in the next week or so.

Does anyone have any information on the Long Island University (Clinical) job?

Does anyone have any information on the Boston College Counseling job?

Anonymous said...

I'm proposing that we, the applicants, collectively send invoices to all of the Universities that posted jobs and pulled them after we had already submitted our materials. I want reimbursement for 1) postage, 2) time spent, and 3) punitive damages.

Anonymous said...

While I appreciate your frustration, asking for "damages" is ridiculous. Many of these schools has no idea that the economy was going to tank any more than we as applicants did - it is not as though they posted a job maliciously to bother you. Besides, if they reopen the spot next year, and you are interested, do you really think a place would consider someone who demanded their postage back.

Anonymous said...

I'm thinking that "punitive damages" was tongue-in-cheek...

Are the Brown positions still open?

Anonymous said...

Regarding seeking reimbursement for postage and "damages" - count me in! Relatedly, here's a letter I drafted in response to rejection letters:

Dear ------, Thank you for reviewing my application and for taking the time to reject. Please know that I received many rejections this year from very qualified institutions. As you know, accepting a rejection is a difficult process. Therefore, I regret to inform you that I cannot accept your rejection, and I will be working at your institution next Fall.

Thank you again for your interest in rejecting me.

Respectfully,

Does anyone know if UMass Amherst has a short list for the developmental position? I know from the wikidot that it's temporarily frozen, but I am curious if anyone has heard another else about the search.

Anonymous said...

I read on the CHE website that some of the SUNY schools and programs are experiencing a hiring freeze for faculty. Any idea if this is affecting psychology job searches? If so, which ones. I applied for a position at a SUNY school (deadline in December) and have heard nothing since my application was acknowledged...also checked the wiki and there is no info since November.

Must. Not. Give. Up. Hope. :-)

Someone asked about one of the searches at the University of North Texas on November 18, 2008 5:03 PM. Any updates on the searches at this univ? I'm wondering if it was called off.

Anonymous said...

I've had no word from North Texas, I assumed they hired or called off the search. I emailed the admin assistant a while back but got no response.

Thanks for the response about UNT. I checked out their website and noticed that the (second) review was scheduled to begin on Feb 1. Although I have a feeling that the search was canceled, I wouldn't bet on it just yet.

Does anyone know about the status of the Denison University job search? I know they've completed phone interviews, but have they notified folks regarding campus interviews yet? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Denison is conducting campus interviews this week, and I believe they are hoping to make an offer next week.

Has anyone heard anything about the Colby-Sawyer Child Development position?

Anonymous said...

In response to the Colby-Sawyer question, they were interviewing on-campus in early Feb, but I don't know if they offered or hired anyone.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the Colby-Sawyer info. Any ideas on College of the Holy Cross, either?

Anonymous said...

RE: Holy Cross

I interviewed there in early December, and they gave me an exploding offer in December that I wasn't able to accept in their time frame, so as far as I know they were going to make another offer in December. I haven't heard anything else.

Question for those interviewing for the visiting jobs @ Reed:

What aspect of psychology did you apply for? (Social, Dev, Clinical?)

Thanks!

Thanks for the info on Holy Cross!

At Umass they offered the job to someone who turned it down. They interviewed 2 new people (recently I think) and should make a decision soon (or maybe they already have???)
